The Campaign

Free the Pill is a campaign to educate and engage the public in support of an over-the-counter (OTC) birth control option in the United States. The campaign supports an OTC pill that is affordable, covered by insurance, and available to people of all ages. Free the Pill is not funded by pharmaceutical companies or the government and is not affiliated with or funded by any political party.

Free the Pill originated out of the Oral Contraceptives (OCs) Over-the-Counter Working Group. The working group was established in 2004 and is a coalition of more than 100 reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations, nonprofit research and advocacy groups, university-based researchers, and prominent clinicians who share a commitment to providing easier access to safe, effective, and affordable contraceptives, especially for those who currently face the greatest barriers, and support making birth control pills available over the counter.

Both Free the Pill and the OCs OTC Working Group are operated by Ibis Reproductive Health, a global nonprofit research organization. If you have any questions about Free the Pill, contact us here.
