CVS Caremark announces Opill on their covered drug list

CVS Caremark announced they would be adding Opill to their “preventive services oral contraceptives list” and covering it at zero-cost to many of the health insurance plans that use their services. Coverage for Opill (and any cost-sharing or co-pays) will still be determined by each individual insurance plan and sponsor. Health plan sponsors, such as those offered by an employer to their staff, can begin offering $0 Opill without requiring a prescription to process at the pharmacy register.

Pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) like CVS Caremark work with pharmacies (like CVS), manufacturers (like Perrigo), and insurance companies to choose which medications are available on drug formularies (the list of medications covered by individual health plans) and to determine what the final price to the customer will be at the register by negotiating discounts with the pharmaceutical companies.
